The Leeds Metropolitan University, UK conferred an Honorary Doctorate to Yash Chopra at a special honorary award convocation ceremony held on 9th June 2007, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Indian Cinema.
Professor Simon Lee, Vice-Chancellor of Leeds Metropolitan University said, “We wanted to honour the people of India by recognizing champions of culture, enterprise and public service.”
Yash Chopra is well known for using foreign locales - especially London and the European countryside for several of his movies.
On the occasion of India celebrating 60 years of its independence this year, the University wished to commemorate India's freedom struggle by honouring prominent Indian personalities who have contributed to the emergence of India as a fast developing, economically strong and cinema-proud nation.
