Mr. Yash Chopra has been conferred upon with a Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (Honoris Causa) by the Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar (India) for his contributions to art and culture.
At the 30th Annual Convocation ceremony of the Guru Nanak Dev University held on 14 February 2004 at Dashmesh auditorium in Amritsar, Mr. Chopra was felicitated with full honours.
Justice O.P. Verma (Retd.), Governor of Punjab and Chancellor of the university presided over the function and conferred the degrees and medals. Mr Justice V.N. Khare, Chief Justice of India was the chief guest on the occasion. Dr S.P. Singh, Vice-Chancellor read out citations before the award of degrees and medals.
Mr Yash Chopra in his acceptance speech urged the state government to institute a 'Punjab Rattan' award to honour Punjabis who had brought glory to India through their commendable jobs in various fields. Reacting to his felicitation, Mr. Chopra said, "It is the biggest honour that I have ever received, as it has been presented in my own homeland and among my people." Speaking in chaste Punjabi, he said hard work, commitment and honesty with profession had made him attain heights in his career.
